Learning is essential fuel for the mind

I truly believe the only way we can create global peace is through not only educating our minds, but our hearts and soul.

These are the words of young Pakistan Malala Yousafzai whose campaign to allow girls in her country to be allowed access to education, resulted in her being shot in the head by a Taliban gunman.  She survived and went on to become the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She, like all of us should, believes education is a human right. Yet there is so much to be done.

One in five adults lack the written communication skills they need to progress in life, and 57 million children do not know what it's like to step inside a classroom. Many millions more are in education, but not learning effectively. But the global challenge is not just about providing access to education, but also ensuring it delivers. As the world changes so must education. The digital age has created many more opportunities for learning. Education is empowerment and helps create a population that is adaptable, creative, confident, curious and learning. It surely is the most necessary of human rights.
