Greenlight for Girls (g4g) is a pioneering international non-profit organization dedicated to closing the persistent gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Far from being a typical academic outreach program, g4g operates on a philosophy that success begins with curiosity and confidence.

Its mission is direct: to encourage girls of any age and background to consider and pursue STEM-related studies and careers by introducing them to the world of science in profoundly fun and exciting ways. This commitment to making science an adventurous, hands-on, and accessible experience has enabled g4g to grow from a simple idea into a worldwide movement that has inspired tens of thousands of young women across six continents.


 

The Genesis of a Worldwide Movement

 

The foundation of Greenlight for Girls is an inspirational tale of rapid, purpose-driven growth. It all began with a single email sent by Founder and Chairman Melissa Rancourt. The message posed a straightforward yet vital question to less than a hundred people worldwide:

“Do you believe there is something we need to do to encourage girls in science?”

The overwhelming affirmative response demonstrated a critical need for action, leading to the official establishment of the organization within 12 months. Fuelled by the passion of an initial wave of over 500 volunteers, g4g swiftly evolved. What started as a flagship event in Brussels, the organization’s international headquarters, soon replicated its model across the globe. G4g’s strategy is not one-size-fits-all; instead, its goals in each region are tailored to the local needs, all while maintaining the universal mission of encouraging girls in science, math, engineering, and technology. This organic, needs-based expansion has ensured that the organization’s impact is both relevant and sustainable in diverse cultural and economic environments.


 

The Guiding Philosophy: Anything is Possible

 

At the heart of g4g’s success is its unique philosophical approach to education, underpinned by the motto: “Anything is Possible.” The organization rejects the notion that STEM subjects are rigid, intimidating, or purely theoretical. Instead, it champions an experiential learning pedagogy coupled with design thinking methodologies.

The g4g approach is centered on breaking down complex subjects into easy-to-understand, engaging techniques. This hands-on, 'learn-by-doing' method ensures that girls are not merely lectured to but are actively involved in scientific discovery. The Symbolism of the Daisy: Math in Nature

 

The g4g logo, which features a simple yet profound daisy, is a physical embodiment of the organization's philosophy—the beauty of linking science and mathematics to the natural world. According to Melissa Rancourt, the daisy is chosen for being "fresh, young, feminine, hopeful—and full of math and science."

 

 

Scientifically, the daisy represents a natural demonstration of the Fibonacci numbers, often called Nature's numbering system. The number of petals in a daisy, like the spirals in a sunflower or the branching of trees, often follow this mathematical sequence, the golden ratio which is the basis of a great deal of mathematical reasoning still used today. By highlighting this inherent connection, Greenlight for Girls subtly teaches a powerful lesson: mathematics is not just an abstract discipline learned in a classroom, but a fundamental principle woven into the fabric of the visible world. Symbolically, the daisy also evokes childhood memories, as it is often one of the first flowers a child learns to draw, making science instantly relatable and familiar.

  • Greenlight for Girls Day: This is the organization's signature one-day, girl-focused event. These large-scale days bring together anywhere from 50 to 350 attendees for a packed day of interactive, hands-on workshops. The workshops are entirely run by volunteer role models—real-world STEM professionals—who demonstrate the fun in their respective fields. Held in inspiring venues like universities, corporate offices, and museums, the events allow girls to conduct experiments, build prototypes, and connect directly with mentors.
  • The Greenlight for Girls Lab: An innovative initiative that pushes the boundaries of outreach by establishing a metaverse world of discovery for young STEM adventurers. This program leverages digital platforms to provide accessible, engaging, and cutting-edge learning experiences regardless of geographical location.
  • g4g STEM Exploratoria: These are hackathon-inspired events that challenge girls with real-world design problems. Participants utilize design thinking to collaboratively develop ideas and solutions, fostering crucial skills in innovation and teamwork.
  • Passport to STEM: This program creates tailored learning projects and resources specifically for teachers and students, ensuring that the g4g spirit and methodology can be integrated into the existing school curriculum.
  • Science, you had me at hello®: An on-the-air broadcast inviting role models to share their journeys through live storytelling, providing authentic, relatable perspectives on STEM careers.

Greenlight for Girls understands that inspiration is most powerful when it comes from an authentic source. The organization has cultivated an extensive network of role models—over 13,000 STEM professionals and mentors—who volunteer their time. These volunteers, with a particular emphasis on females in STEM fields, provide a crucial function: they allow the girls to visualize themselves in these aspirational careers. As one g4g girl noted, "It just depends on what your talents are, not your gender. And today has further proven that for me."

This vast volunteer network is amplified by strong, committed partnerships with major global corporations. Companies like 3M, AIG, Cisco, Covestro, Nokia, P&G, Solvay, and the Vodafone Foundation not only provide financial resources but also open their doors to host events, offer their employees as mentors, and showcase the real-world application of STEM in industry. These partnerships are instrumental in transforming abstract concepts into tangible career possibilities.

Since its inception, Greenlight for Girls has demonstrated a significant, measurable impact. As of recent figures, the organization has engaged and personally inspired more than 60,000 girls across 39 countries, conducting over 500 events worldwide. The growth highlights a sustained and successful effort to reach girls worldwide, from urban centers to less economically advantaged communities.

The ultimate vision of g4g is a balanced world where every girl, regardless of her nation or background, knows she has the choice and the possibility to enter the world of math, science, engineering, and technology.
