SOFAFRICA (Spreading Organic Farming in Africa) Founded in 2017 is a registered non-governmental community based organization that focuses on ensuring continued learning and practice of Agro-Ecological Agriculture in rural communities for improved food and dietary conditions.

 

SOFAFRICA is located in Kenya where the organization serves the local community of farmers, youths, schools and the community food chain to ensure healthy living and sustainability of the community food, water and nature.

They provide training to farmers and schools on climate change mitigation strategies, indigenous seed saving, water and soil conservation, organic agriculture, natural resources conservation, rural development, nutrition, animal welfare, human rights especially for the young, elderly, handicap, mentally retarded, disabled and related issues based on public policy, the best available science, and effective management.

 

They have a vision to provide economic opportunity through innovation, helping rural Kenyans to thrive; to promote agriculture production that better nourishes Kenyans/ Africans while also helping feed others throughout the world; and to preserve their Nation's natural resources through conservation, restored forests, improved watersheds, and healthy private working lands.

As the founder of SOFAFRICA once said that;

"Food security, water and sanitation play an essential and critical role in the well-being of people in developing countries. These issues are closely linked and influence each other. A combined approach is advised resulting in the improvement of food security, increasing water quality and vanishing problems due to poor sanitation."

Hence, there's a need for a continuous execution of these plans to ensure its reality. 

In practice, they grow organic food. Organic farming they practice has several benefits for both human health and the environment.

 

Here are some of the key advantages:

Healthier food: Organic farming practices prioritize the use of natural methods to cultivate crops and raise livestock. Organic farmers avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As a result, organic produce tends to have lower levels of pesticide residues, and studies have shown that organic fruits, vegetables, and grains can have higher levels of certain nutrients, such as vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and antioxidants.

 

Reduced exposure to chemicals: Organic farming avoids the use of synthetic chemicals, which means that farmers, farm workers, and consumers are exposed to fewer potentially harmful substances. Prolonged exposure to pesticides and other synthetic chemicals has been linked to various health issues, including cancer, hormone disruption, neurological disorders, and respiratory problems.

 

Preservation of soil fertility: Organic farming practices focus on building and maintaining healthy soil through the use of techniques like crop rotation, composting, and the application of organic matter. These practices enhance soil fertility, structure, and moisture retention capacity. Healthy soil promotes the growth of nutrient-rich crops, reduces erosion, and helps mitigate the effects of drought and flooding.

 

Water conservation: Organic farming methods emphasize efficient water management strategies, such as the use of cover crops, mulching, and proper irrigation practices. By promoting healthy soil structure and moisture retention, organic farming helps reduce water runoff, soil erosion, and water pollution. It also supports groundwater recharge and helps maintain water quality in nearby streams, rivers, and lakes.

 

Biodiversity conservation: Organic farming encourages the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity. It promotes the use of natural pest control methods, such as beneficial insects, birds, and other predators, which helps maintain a balanced ecosystem on the farm. Organic farms also tend to have more diverse crop rotations and plantings, which support pollinators, beneficial insects, and wildlife habitats.

 

Lower carbon footprint: Organic farming typically relies on fewer energy-intensive inputs, such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, organic practices, such as the use of cover crops and organic soil management, sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and contribute to mitigating climate change.

 

Reduced pollution: By avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals, organic farming helps prevent water and soil pollution. Synthetic pesticides and fertilizers can leach into waterways, contaminating drinking water sources and harming aquatic life. Organic farming practices minimize such pollution risks and promote the use of natural alternatives.

 

Furthermore, SOFAFRICA have been able to achieve the following: 

 

  • 250 vulnerable children reached under schools gardening and feeding programs.
  • 500 Trees Nurseries Established in schools and local groups.
  • 50 people living with HIV&AIDS reached a small livestock revolving project for food security and economic empowerment / entrepreneurship.
  • 2000 Farmers trained on sustainable agro ecological agriculture and environmental conservation.
  • 50 indigenous community seed banks established.
  • Sustainable Bamboo Tree Project to restore Kenya.
  • Engagement with community-based child care centers/orphanages.
  • Partnerships with government ministries, learning institutions, colleges and universities.
  • Products value addition initiative.
  • International Volunteer programs initiative.
  • Launch of SOFAFRICA coffee camps for eco-tourism and cultural exchanges.
  • Local Community Table Banking to enhance economic empowerment.
  • Community Library.
  • Research on bamboo Sustainable Fashion programs.
  • Research on spirulina and value chain.
