The dark days of these last few years,
A new war, no need to fight,
Totalitarian legacy,
A battle of dark versus light.

A new disease sweeps through the world,
The media swelled the public fears,
That broke a generations psyche,
With a multitude of tears.

The fear of God into our kids,

Masked up, sent home from school.

At warp speed, solutions found,
Lockdowns, masks, distance, big pharm,
The speed of science, before we paused,
Injections into arms.

It all seemed rushed, corners cut,
Ethics and safety swept aside,
The solution in a Pfizer vial,
Turned into genocide.

The harms became apparent,
When the roll out gathered pace,
Injured, hurt, perpetually ill,
The despair on my patients face!

Reflecting now I can’t explain
The overreach and violence
Displayed by those charged to keep us safe,
But met by colleagues silence.

Where is the anger, where is the rage?
The public lost their fight,
Our children’s future met with apathy,
Darkness seeming to defeat the light.

But when all hope seems to have been lost,
A small remnant awaken,
In isolation a few stand out,
The fire in their souls are shaken.

Against all odds, Against the flock,
In isolation first, against mounting derision,
An army of brave soldiers build,
To fight totalitarian division

Entrepreneurship is a key driver of economic growth and development in Nigeria. A new report was put together. ‘State of Entrepreneurship Index Report for Nigeria’ by the FATE Institute of the popular FATE Foundation.

The Fate Institute State-Level Entrepreneurial Index Ranking measures the enabling environment for entrepreneurship in each state of the country. Including access to finance, infrastructure, and human capital. 

Public and private sectors play significant roles in development of these states.

Measured according to business performance, skills acquisition, innovation and technology adoption. Perception of future opportunities, enabling business environment, index score and rank.

Entrepreneurship Nigeria State by State

The top 10 states leading entrepreneurship development in Nigeria according to the 2022 ranking are:

1. Imo 

Imo State's entrepreneurship development has made significant strides. Namely the technology sector, where startups are flourishing.

The state has a growing number of startups and incubators, and has invested in infrastructure development to support entrepreneurship. 

The state government has launched several initiatives to support small businesses and startups. The local ecosystem has seen an influx of investment and innovation.

Imo State Investment Promotion Agency (ISIPA)

One of the most notable entrepreneurship development initiatives in Imo State is the Imo State Investment Promotion Agency (ISIPA), which was established to attract investment to the state and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). ISIPA offers a range of services to entrepreneurs and investors, including investment facilitation, business registration, and access to funding.

Imo State’s business performance was 0.17. With skills acquisition of 0.16. Innovation and technology adoption measured 0.18. Perception of future opportunities was 0.22. Enabling business environment indicated 0.08. Index score was 0.82 and rank was 1.

2. Bauchi

Bauchi State has a relatively young population and has invested in human capital development. They have launched several initiatives to support entrepreneurship and innovation. Including a technology hub. With business performance of 0.15. Bauchi measured 0.14 for skills acquisition. 0.17 in innovation and technology adoption. 0.21 for perception of future opportunities. Enabling business environment was 0.05. Index score was 0.72, with rank of 2.

Bauchi State Investment Promotion Agency (BIPA), was established to attract investment to the state and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). BIPA offers a range of services to entrepreneurs and investors, including investment facilitation, business registration, and access to funding.

Bauchi State established the Bauchi State Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (BASMEDA). They provide training and capacity building for SMEs, and access to finance and other resources.

3. Delta

Delta State has a strong manufacturing base and has launched several initiatives to support entrepreneurship and attract investment. The state has invested in infrastructure development to support entrepreneurship. State’s business performance was 0.16. Its skills acquisition was 0.12. Innovation and technology adoption was 0.13. Perception of future opportunities measured 0.23. Enabling business environment was fixed at 0.05. Index score and rank were 0.70 and 3 respectively.

Delta State Investment Development Agency (DIDA)

Delta State Investment Development Agency (DIDA), which was established to attract investment to the state. To support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). DIDA offers a range of services to entrepreneurs and investors, including investment facilitation, business registration, and access to funding.

Delta State established the Delta State Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (DESMEDA). They provide training and capacity building for SMEs. With access to finance and other resources.

The state government launched several other initiatives to support entrepreneurship development. The Delta State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund, which provides funding and technical assistance to SMEs. The Delta State Innovation Hub, which provides a platform for entrepreneurs to access resources and collaborate with other startups.

4. Plateau

Plateau State, which ranked fourth has a growing tourism sector and has invested in infrastructure development to support entrepreneurship. The state launched several initiatives to support innovation and technology. 

Plateau State Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (PLASMEDA) was established. To provide training, funding and support to SMEs in the state. They offer a range of services to entrepreneurs and investors, including business advisory, mentorship, and access to finance.

Plateau State established the Plateau State Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA). They provide training and capacity building for SMEs in the technology industry. Access to funding and other resources.

The state government launched several other initiatives to support entrepreneurship development. The Plateau State Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (PL-YESS). They provide training and funding for young entrepreneurs. The Plateau State Economic and Investment Summit, which provides a platform for entrepreneurs to network and access funding opportunities.

In business performance it had a score of 0.15. Skills acquisition of 0.15. Innovation and technology adoption was 0.15. Perception of future opportunities, 0.21. Enabling business environment was 0.04, with an index score of 0.69.

5. Gombe

Gombe, a relatively small state, has made significant progress in the technology sector. Resulting in the development of tech starts. They have limited resources and infrastructure.

One of the most notable technology initiatives in Gombe is the Gombe State Innovation Hub. This was established by the state government to support tech startups and innovation. The hub provides co-working spaces, mentorship, funding opportunities, and access to a network of tech experts and investors.

Gombe launched several other initiatives to support technology and innovation. The Gombe Goes Digital program, which aims to digitize government services and processes. The Gombe Tech Academy, which provides training and skills development for young people in tech-related fields.

6. Bayelsa

Bayelsa State has a growing technology ecosystem, with several startups and incubators. The state invested in infrastructure development to support entrepreneurship.

A significant move in the state is the Edo State Skills Development Agency (EdoJobs), which was established to provide training, funding and support to SMEs in the state. EdoJobs offers a range of services to entrepreneurs and investors, including business advisory, mentorship, and access to finance.

The State established the Edo State Innovation Hub. They provide training and capacity building for SMEs in the technology industry. Access to funding and other resources.

8. Kaduna

Kaduna State invested in infrastructure development. Creating a better transportation sector. The state has launched several initiatives to support entrepreneurship and attract investment.

KADSTEP offers a range of services to entrepreneurs and investors, including business advisory, mentorship, and access to finance.

Kaduna State established the Kaduna State ICT Hub. They provide training and capacity building for SMEs in the technology industry. Access to funding and other resources. 

9. Ebonyi

Ebonyi State has a relatively young population and has invested in human capital development. The state launched several initiatives to support entrepreneurship and innovation.

Ebonyi State Ministry of Empowerment and Job Creation was established to provide training, funding, and support to SMEs in the state. The ministry offers a range of services to entrepreneurs and investors, including business advisory, mentorship, and access to finance.

The State established the Ebonyi State Centre for Entrepreneurship Development. They provide training and capacity building for SMEs in various industries. Access to funding and other resources.

With rank of 9, Ebonyi States business performance was 0.15. Skills acquisition was 0.12. Innovation and technology adoption; 0.15. Perception of future opportunities; 0.19. Enabling business environment; 0.04, and index score; 0.65. 

10. Benue

Benue State has a growing agriculture sector. They launched several initiatives to support agribusiness and entrepreneurship development. The Benue State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund, which provides access to affordable loans for SMEs in the state. The Benue State Youth Empowerment Scheme, which provides training and funding for young entrepreneurs.

The private sector plays a significant role in entrepreneurship development in Benue State. The state has a growing agriculture and agribusiness ecosystem. Startups and agribusiness incubators. Companies like Dangote Group. They produce a range of products from cement to sugar, are contributing to the growth of the local economy.

Business performance for Benue State was measured at 0.13. Skills acquisition indicated 0.14. Innovation and technology adoption was 0.15. Perception of future opportunities; 0.20. Enabling business environment; 0.05. Index score of 0.65 and ranked 10.

These 10 states are leading the way in entrepreneurship development in Nigeria, creating a supportive environment for startups and small businesses to thrive. 

The ranking is a useful tool for policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs to identify areas for improvement and investment.

Community wellness refers to the overall health and well-being of a group of people living within a particular geographic location. Because obesity is a complex disease, there are various ways that it can be countered. It could include exercise routines like high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or increased access to healthy foods. It could also be medical weight loss programs that are able to address the multifaceted aspects of obesity within a community. These programs combine behavioral changes and medication such as Saxenda for weight loss to achieve optimal results. Weight loss medications help individuals struggling with biology-based weight loss barriers by lowering their appetite and slowing their gastric emptying, which naturally lengthens the feeling of fullness and decreases overall calorie intake.

As a community member, one way to help fight the prevalence of this disease is through educating others regarding its detrimental effects as well as the various weight loss strategies that can be taken. Should local officials promise to include obesity measures in their platforms, you can also use your voting power to ensure your community elects leaders who will actively address this concern.

Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most significant public health concerns that continues to affect millions and contributes to a rise in chronic illnesses. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to a range of serious complications, such as stroke, heart disease, kidney damage, vision loss, and even lower limb amputations.

Being a hereditary disease, it is actually possible for it to be detected early on, which can make it easier to manage in the long run. However, not everyone is aware of this, which is why it is important to educate communities on factors such as how it can be caught early through screenings like fasting blood sugar tests and available treatments such as NovoLog insulin injections. With proper education, communities will better understand the importance of healthy lifestyles, which is one of the most effective ways to prevent diabetes. Moreover, it affects cognitive functioning, including memory, concentration, and decision-making abilities. Unfortunately, depression and other mental health issues are tied to wider issues like homelessness, poverty, and disability. Organizations such as the Sacramento Homeless Union highlight and address how living in poverty can be overwhelming and stressful, affecting individual well-being — and causing far-reaching effects on society in the long-run.

Community interventions are a powerful tool that can challenge the prevailing stigmatization of depression and other mental health conditions. By educating communities, sharing stories of recovery, and organizing campaigns and support groups, communities can foster an environment of empathy, compassion, and understanding. Destigmatizing mental health conditions encourages individuals to seek help and allows them to feel supported and accepted.

If joining such efforts is not something you feel comfortable doing, maybe because of your own trials and sensitivities, then even just promoting a supportive energy within your inner circle will help. As stated in our post entitled "The Best Thing You Can Give Somebody is a Chance - and that Includes Yourself", sharing positive affirmations, both to yourself and among those around you, is the best way to give people a chance and help mitigate the feelings of loneliness that often accompany mental health conditions like depression.

On October 24, 1975, women in Iceland went on strike to protest sex inequality. The strike was called "The Day Off for Women" and it involved over 90% of women in the country. Women refused to work, cook, clean, or take care of children. The strike was a huge success and it led to a number of changes, including a law that guaranteed equal pay for equal work.

The People's Hub organization based in the UK has joined efforts with the Eastfield Foundation school based in Ghana to empower women in their vicinity with skills that could help them to fight poverty and to develop them to be the "total woman".

The Peoples Hub organization has a vision to help communities, help end homelessness, hunger, poverty and ignorance by empowering youths with skills, education and provision of fundamental human needs. They know that making a difference in someone's life is far superior to making a living.

Help and Train Women

On the execution side to help and train women is Selasi Nyakpo from Ghana, who had the vision to support women through the Eastfield Foundation school's program. The foundation believes the people in the society can live a good and better life if given opportunities and resources, and can further help those who don't have any of these in their wider community.

Recently, the Eastfield Foundation school was sponsored by The People's Hub to organize training in cake baking and pastry making. The training was targeted at women and youths especially in rural areas.

Women and youths in various rural areas were available at the training center. The creativity, passion and love for learning displayed by those available absolutely pointed to the fact that there are potentials. There are unique abilities within so many people. They only needed opportunities and support to harness these abilities for their individual usefulness.

Summary of work

- Organised 8 vocational training programs for 800 girls and women in 15 communities across 6 districts in Ghana.

- Conducted management and entrepreneurial skills training sessions for 400 women at 5 districts in Ghana.

- Distributed 300 pair of crutches to 4 disability groups in the Central Region.

- Planted about 350 trees in 23 communities in 4 districts of Ghana.

- Organised 7 awareness and sensitization programs on rights of less-abled persons in 15 communities across 3 districts namely Awutu Senya East Municipal, Ga South, and Amasaman district all in the Greater Accra Region, Ghana.

Preparation

Observations

During the training, it was observed that the attitude to learning, ability to organize oneself and understanding the processes and procedures in achieving tangible results was exhibited by those available at the training center. Questions were raised during and after the training, however, these questions indicated that the ideas on cake baking and pastry making have been received and understood but the lack of source and support for further practice is a threat to these individuals. The People's Hub wish to help Eastfield Foundation train more women in their communities.

About Karen

Karen's expertise in planning and environment sees her acting for developers, landowners and objectors. Her experience working for a local planning authority gives her a unique perspective. She works closely with most practice areas across the firm and has experience of contentious matters including judicial review and public inquiries. She is dual qualified in New York.

She has extensive experience of acting for third parties concerned by the impact of a proposed development, including judicial review proceedings. She is accustomed to quickly interpreting development proposals and submitting objections to planning and listed building applications. Her contentious experience also includes public inquiry work such as planning appeals and traffic order schemes.

Karen has acted for third parties affected by compulsory purchase orders, including HS2 and TfL schemes. She works closely with specialist counsel and CPO surveyors.

Karen also acts for a number of developers and has advised on the community infrastructure levy, local plans, section 106 agreements and related infrastructure, development and promotion agreements.

Having worked for a local planning authority Karen is familiar with the approach of authorities to planning enforcement action, including listed buildings. She regularly acts for clients affected by breaches of planning control and co-ordinates effectively with planning and heritage consultants to achieve a resolution.

We are all familiar with stories of developers claiming that their development is not able to provide promised infrastructure or affordable housing, using 'viability' as the excuse. Communities lose out: the housing is built, but without the benefits promised at the outset. Please join us to find out about one of the least understood areas of planning: viability appraisals.

This is one of the most important webinars to attend to if we are to redress the balance in the system between developers (who deliberately ensure the system is complex), and communities/councils (who need to scrutinize proposals to ensure best outcomes are delivered.)

Murray is an experienced property professional with a 30-year track record of successfully helping to deliver development projects of all types across the UK, ranging from housing, leisure, and logistic parks, through to major commercial and residential mixed-use developments, to complex regeneration schemes and transformational integrated development ventures.

Murray focuses on providing bespoke development management and viability advice to Local Authorities. He is a leading practitioner in viability and is currently undertaking a PhD specialising in this subject matter and regularly acts as an expert witness in planning appeal cases. He is a Director with property consultancy Continuum DM.
