Cockpit is an award-winning social enterprise that serves as the UK's only business incubator for craftspeople. With locations in Bloomsbury and Deptford, London, Cockpit's mission is to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity by providing a supportive environment where independent creative businesses can thrive.

History and Mission

Cockpit's roots trace back to an 18th-century cockfighting arena in Bloomsbury that was later repurposed for cabinet making. In 1986, the organization was formally established to provide affordable studio space for young, unemployed makers. Since then, it has grown to become a cornerstone of London's creative community. As a registered charity and social enterprise, Cockpit is dedicated to promoting social justice by ensuring that careers in craft are accessible to talented individuals from all backgrounds. The organization's core belief is in the transformative power of craft to shape a better world.

Support for Makers

More than just a workspace, Cockpit provides a comprehensive suite of business support services designed to help makers at every stage of their career. These offerings include:

  • Affordable Studio Space: Makers get access to secure studios with 24/7 access, heating, and superfast broadband. The studios are available on flexible, easy in/out terms.
  • Expert Business Incubation: The organization offers a tiered professional development program, including one-on-one coaching, business training, and workshops on topics like marketing, finance, and IT.
  • Networking and Community: Makers become part of a vibrant, collaborative community. Shared spaces and collaborative projects encourage the sharing of ideas and experiences.

The Cockpit Community

The community at Cockpit is home to over 175 independent creative businesses, representing more than 20 craft disciplines. This diverse group includes jewellers, ceramicists, glass artists, furniture makers, weavers, and leatherworkers. The blend of both well-established and emerging artists creates a dynamic ecosystem where new talent can learn from celebrated names in the field. Cockpit is known for launching the careers of some of the biggest names in contemporary craft, making a studio placement there a recognized mark of quality.
