Founded in 2004 by veteran Venetian bookseller Luigi Frizzo, the store’s name translates literally to "High Water Bookshop." It refers to the periodic tidal flooding (acqua alta) that inundates the Venetian Lagoon every autumn and winter.

Rather than fighting the tides, Libreria Acqua Alta integrated the water directly into its store design. By storing hundreds of thousands of new, used, rare, and out-of-print books inside waterproof bathtubs, full-sized Venetian gondolas, canoes, and wooden barrels, the shop transformed a severe environmental challenge into an internationally recognized cultural destination.

The Vision of Luigi Frizzo (2004)

Before opening Libreria Acqua Alta in 2004, founder Luigi Frizzo lived a globe-trotting life—working as a waiter, sailor, and traveler across Europe, South America, and Asia. When he decided to settle in Venice and open a bookstore in his sixties, he selected a ground-floor space immediately adjacent to a working canal in the Castello neighborhood.

In Venice, ground-floor spaces (piani terra) are highly vulnerable to tidal flooding. Standard booksellers avoided these areas because paper absorbs water quickly, destroying stock. Frizzo recognized that if he wanted to occupy a ground-floor site directly on the canal water line, he needed to create floating, waterproof containers for his inventory.

Venice experiences acqua alta when strong Adriatic winds (specifically the Sirocco) coincide with high astronomical tides, pushing water into the lagoon and over the city’s stone walkways.

When the sea level rises above +110 cm, water flows up through drain pipes and over canal walls. When tidal waters seep into Libreria Acqua Alta, the floor floods with several inches—and occasionally feet—of saltwater. Because the books are stored in floating structures, the inventory rises with the tide, keeping the paper completely dry.

1. The Full-Sized Gondola

Dominating the center of the main room is a full-length, 11-meter-long traditional Venetian gondola. Sanded, varnished, and retrofitted into a display shelf, the vessel holds thousands of titles dedicated to Venetian history, art, architecture, and fiction.

2. The Staircase of Books (Escalera de Libros)

In the small outdoor courtyard at the back of the store stands a famous installation: a staircase made entirely from abandoned, water-damaged encyclopedias, dictionaries, and legal texts.

Instead of throwing away damaged books after major flood events, Luigi Frizzo stacked them to create steps leading up to the top of the courtyard boundary wall. Visitors can climb the staircase to look over the canal wall and watch passing gondolas and water taxis.

At the edge of one of the indoor side rooms sits a door labeled as an emergency exit. Opening the door reveals no sidewalk or street—only a velvet armchair placed at the edge of the open canal water. Visitors frequently sit in the chair with a book while water laps against the stone doorstep.

The Impact on the Store

The sheer height of the water breached the rims of several display bathtubs and pushed water over the top of the central gondola. Thousands of bottom-shelf books were submerged in saltwater and destroyed, causing tens of thousands of euros in damage.

Community Recovery

Within hours of the floodwaters receding, dozens of local Venetian youths (known locally as the "Angeli del Fango" or Mud Angels) along with international students gathered at the store. Volunteers helped clear out damaged stock, dry out salvageable volumes with hair dryers, clean away mud and salt deposits, and rebuild the damaged book staircases.

The global response highlighted the store's status not just as a retail shop, but as a beloved piece of living Venetian heritage.
