A Spark Born in Bolton

The story of OnSide does not begin in a corporate boardroom or a government ministry. It began in 1889 at the Bolton Lads and Girls Club in the industrial heartland of the North West. For over a century, that single club provided young people in Bolton with warmth, recreation, and a safe place to go when the factory smoke cleared.

In the mid-2000s, serial entrepreneur Bill Holroyd was invited to serve as Chairman of the Bolton club. What he witnessed inside its walls was extraordinary: thousands of young people from every background, buzzing with energy, learning music, climbing walls, gaining confidence, and forming life-changing bonds with adult mentors.

Yet, as Holroyd looked across the rest of the United Kingdom, he saw a stark contrast. Decades of budget cuts, austerity, and urban decay had closed hundreds of traditional youth clubs. In town after town, young people were left with nowhere to go, congregating on street corners or isolated in dark bedrooms.

The question Holroyd asked was simple:

Why should a world-class youth centre be a privilege exclusive to Bolton? Why can't every young person in Britain have access to a palace of opportunity?

In 2008, OnSide was officially founded as a national charity. Its mission was breathtakingly ambitious: to replicate the Bolton blueprint across the UK by raising hundreds of millions of pounds to construct state-of-the-art, multimillion-pound "Youth Zones" in the nation’s most economically disadvantaged communities.

  1. Young People & The Community: Before a brick is laid, local youth are recruited as project ambassadors. They help design the building, choose the color palettes, vote on the Youth Zone’s name, and sit on interview panels for staff. It is their space from day one.

  2. Local Authorities: OnSide collaborates closely with forward-thinking councils, securing land and joint capital funding to ensure the Youth Zone integrates seamlessly into regional social care and youth services.
