In the world of model railroading, space has traditionally been the ultimate barrier. A full layout often requires a dedicated spare room, a loft conversion, or years of carpentry to construct an intricate baseboard. Suitcase Trains turns that traditional constraint completely on its head. Based in Rugby, Warwickshire, UK, this specialist studio builds fully functional, intricately detailed, working model railway dioramas housed entirely inside vintage suitcases, vanity cases, and steamer trunks.

The concept combines nostalgic upcycling with fine scale-modeling expertise. When the latches of an antique case are unclipped and the lid is lifted, a complete, self-contained mini-world comes to life—complete with operational tracks, detailed landscapes, working power controllers, micro-lighting, and hand-painted scenery.
Founded by artisan scale-model makers Sheena and Andy, Suitcase Trains was established to bring the joy of model railways to enthusiasts who lack the space or technical construction skills needed to build a traditional layout from scratch.
Each project begins with sourcing vintage, character-rich luggage—from classic 1950s leather vanity cases to massive antique steamer trunks. The interior is carefully reinforced, wired, and sculpted using lightweight composite materials.
Building inside a enclosed luggage case presents unique engineering challenges:
Tight Radius Trackwork: The layout requires carefully calculated track curves to ensure that micro-locomotives can run smoothly without derailing within the tight confines of a suitcase.
3D Vertical Landscaping: To maximize space, layouts often feature a multi-layered design. Tracks wind through tunnels, over bridges, past rural churches, and beside village pubs, with scenery built up inside both the base and the lid of the case.
Integrated Power Systems: Every layout comes pre-wired with an integrated Gaugemaster power controller, making it a plug-and-play experience.
Suitcase Trains produces builds across two distinct pathways: bespoke personal commissions and ready-to-run off-the-shelf creations.

Due to size constraints, Suitcase Trains specializes in compact model scales:
N Gauge (1:148 Scale): The primary format for standard suitcase sizes. Its compact footprint allows for complex continuous loops, multi-track stations, and detailed townscapes.
009 Gauge (1:76 Scale Narrow Gauge): Used primarily in larger steamer trunk builds. This combines 00 scale detailing with narrow-gauge track widths, capturing the charm of heritage, industrial, or quarry railways.
