The Caravan: Eat. Educate. Entertain.

The philosophy of "Eat. Educate. Entertain." is the foundation of The Caravan's unique approach to community engagement. This three-part motto guides all of their programming and defines how they interact with the people they serve. It’s a simple but powerful concept designed to break down barriers to learning and create a welcoming environment for everyone.

  • Eat: This component focuses on food as a universal language and a tool for bringing people together. The Caravan uses cooking and nutrition as a primary medium for their workshops and performances. By using food as a central theme, they can easily engage people of all ages and backgrounds. Their hands-on cooking classes empower individuals to learn practical skills for preparing healthy meals, while also promoting food literacy and the joy of sharing a meal.
  • Educate: Education is woven into every activity, from cooking workshops to musical performances. The Caravan uses a curriculum that teaches not only life skills—like cooking on a budget and kitchen safety—but also occupational skills, like those needed for a career in the food industry. They also integrate topics like nutrition, literacy, and music theory into their programs in a way that is engaging and fun, making learning feel natural and accessible.
  • Entertain: The entertainment aspect is crucial for keeping participants engaged and for creating a lively, enjoyable atmosphere. The Caravan uses music, comedy, and performance to deliver their educational content. This theatrical approach captures the attention of audiences and makes complex information about nutrition or food preparation memorable. It also helps to build a sense of community by creating shared, positive experiences.

Programs and Offerings

The Caravan’s programming is a direct manifestation of its core philosophy. They offer a wide range of activities tailored to different audiences, from children to adults. Their programs are highly adaptable and have been delivered in various formats, including in-person workshops, pre-recorded virtual videos, and live performances.

  • Cooking Classes: A central part of their work, these classes focus on hands-on cooking and nutrition. They have developed specific curricula, such as a "recipe-based" class where students prepare dozens of recipes in a single semester. These classes also teach kitchen safety techniques that align with professional standards, such as those needed for ServSafe certification.
  • Kids in the Kitchen: In partnership with organizations like Madison Health, The Caravan has developed series specifically designed to address nutritional issues like childhood obesity and diabetes. These programs focus on creating simple, healthful snacks that children can easily replicate at home.

 

  • Food Entrepreneurship: Going beyond basic life skills, The Caravan provides curriculum that teaches students about "food entrepreneurism," exploring the various ways to earn a living in the food industry outside of a traditional restaurant setting.
  • Virtual Programming: The organization quickly adapted to the pandemic by creating a series of pre-recorded virtual programs. These videos mirrored the energy of their in-person classes and were used by schools, libraries, and daycares across Ohio to provide educational and entertaining content.
  • Music Workshops: In line with their "Entertain" motto, The Caravan also provides music workshops, offering participants a creative outlet and another way to engage with the organization’s educational content.

Partnerships and Collaborations

A key to The Caravan's success is its network of partnerships and collaborations with other organizations. These relationships allow them to extend their reach, secure funding, and provide specialized services to a wide range of communities.

  • Children's Hunger Alliance: The Caravan has partnered with this organization, along with Ohio Health and WOSU, to create video series aimed at teaching children basic cooking and nutrition.
  • Community Houses: They have worked closely with community centers, such as Gladden Community House, where they provide quarterly cooking lessons for kids and teens, often using ingredients sourced from the Gladden Food Pantry. This partnership earned them a Community Partnership Award in 2015.
  • Food Banks and Afterschool Programs: The Caravan has collaborated with organizations like Mid-Ohio Foodbank, where they teach lessons while preparing meals for local food pantries. They also connect with afterschool programs across Ohio to create new partnerships and expose them to their curriculum.
  • Private Sector and Events: The Caravan has also partnered with businesses for special events, such as a "Chef Battle" series with Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, where they engaged shoppers and used children as sous chefs to showcase creative flavors.

Their extensive network of collaborations ensures that their services reach a wide and diverse audience, from afterschool groups and summer meal programs to community centers and private events.
