The Nature Nook: Animal Rescue & Care

We know a lot of pet shops claim they’re different from all the others – but we really mean it! We promise that all of our products are safe, wholesome, and healthy for the pets they are intended for.

Business Model: A Community Interest Company (CIC)

The Nature Nook is a Community Interest Company (CIC), a special type of social enterprise in the UK. This means its primary goal is to benefit the community rather than make a profit for private owners. All of the profits generated by The Nature Nook are reinvested directly back into its core purpose: animal rescue and care. This non-profit approach distinguishes it from a typical pet store and positions it as a community-focused organization dedicated to animal welfare.


Products and Specializations

The Nature Nook specializes in providing a wide range of products for exotic animals and "small furries," with a strong emphasis on reptile, bird, and rodent care. Their product line includes:

  • Enrichment and Hides: Items like cork bark, grapevine, coconut hides, and plastic plants designed to create a stimulating environment for pets.
  • Foods and Treats: They sell various foods, including Burgess Nature Snacks and Dandelion Root, catering to the specific dietary needs of exotic animals.
  • Accessories: The store offers a variety of supplies, such as rat hammocks and secondhand vivariums, providing a one-stop shop for setting up a proper habitat.

The business prides itself on offering quality, ethical advice based on years of experience, ensuring that customers are well-informed about the proper care of their pets.


Animal Rescue and Rehoming

The animal rescue service is at the heart of The Nature Nook's mission. The initiative began in late 2021 when the organization took in a false map turtle named Terry, whose owner could no longer care for it. Since then, the rescue has grown to rehome over 60 animals, with a particular focus on birds and reptiles.

The cost of caring for each rescued animal is estimated to be between £80 and £150, and these expenses are covered entirely by the profits from their sales. By supporting the shop, customers are directly contributing to the rescue and rehoming of animals in need.
