Theatre of the Oppressed NYC (TONYC) partners with communities facing systemic oppression to create participatory theater that drives social and political action. Grounded in the methodology established by Brazilian theater-maker and activist Augusto Boal, TONYC transforms passive audience members into active "spect-actors" who explore, rehearse, and test real-world solutions to complex social issues.

Working alongside local community groups, advocacy networks, and direct service providers, TONYC builds troupes of actors who share lived experiences of homelessness, over-policing, immigration challenges, economic inequality, and discrimination.

1. Roots & Core Methodology

Augusto Boal & The Forum Theater Model

TONYC builds directly on the radical theater techniques pioneered by Augusto Boal in the 1970s, which were inspired by Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Rather than treating theater as entertainment or passive spectating, Boal viewed the stage as a rehearsal space for real life.

How a TONYC Performance Works

  1. Devising the Play: TONYC actors build original plays based on their actual, lived experiences with systemic barriers, discrimination, or institutional injustice.

  2. The Performance: The troupe performs the short play, which concludes at a moment of unresolved conflict or crisis.

  3. Audience Intervention: Guided by a facilitator known as the "Joker," the scene is restarted. Audience members stop the action, step onto the stage, replace a protagonist, and improvise alternative strategies to dismantle the obstacle.

  4. Policy Discussion: The performance concludes with open dialogue among community members, activists, and policymakers to turn onstage interventions into real-world advocacy and legislative goals.
