Five Times August is the primary musical vehicle and moniker for singer-songwriter Brad Skistimas. Originating out of Dallas, Texas, in 2001, the project began when Skistimas was just 18 years old. Operating largely as a solo artist backed by a rotating ensemble of studio and touring musicians, Skistimas built his brand on an uncompromising DIY (Do-It-Yourself) ethos.
During the mid-2000s acoustic-pop boom, Five Times August emerged as a vanguard for self-funded independent artists. Skistimas circumvented traditional record label gatekeepers by utilizing early digital distribution networks and social media platforms to reach listeners directly. In 2007, he achieved a historical industry milestone by becoming the first completely unsigned act to secure nationwide physical album distribution through Walmart stores with his record The Independent.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Five Times August earned widespread commercial placements across major television networks (including MTV, The CW, ABC, and FOX), film soundtracks, and national commercial campaigns. In the 2020s, the project underwent a radical thematic transformation, pivoting from mainstream indie-pop toward overt political protest music, socio-political commentary, and direct cultural critique.

The early discography centered on melodic acoustic guitar work, introspective lyricism, and catchy pop structures. Tracks like "Better With You" gained early traction through platforms like CDBaby and MySpace, leading to prominent placement on MTV’s Laguna Beach. This success opened doors to extensive national touring and regular licensing deals. Albums such as Brighter Side (2008) and Life As A Song (2009) featured high-production re-recordings of his early catalog alongside new material, collaborating with Grammy-winning producers like Andy Zulla.
In 2018, Skistimas expanded his creative scope by launching The Juicebox Jukebox, a children’s music and educational initiative. Aimed at creating engaging, high-quality music for children and parents, the project produced the 2020 album Now Hear This!. The accompanying animated videos garnered tens of millions of views online, establishing a separate footprint in educational media.
The onset of global COVID-19 mandates and shifting political climates marked a sharp transition in the project's direction. Five Times August transitioned into an acoustic protest voice, releasing a string of controversial, topically focused singles.
"Sad Little Man" (2021): A viral acoustic critique targeting public health officials, which reached #1 on multiple digital charts despite algorithm suppression and demonetization on major platforms.
"Silent War" (2022): The title track and anchor for the 2022 full-length album, which compiled his protest singles. The album peaked in the top 5 of Amazon’s overall best-selling albums chart upon release.
"Ain't No Rock And Roll" & "Liars, Cheats, and Crooks" (2023–2024): Released in collaboration with indie label Baste Records, these tracks took aim at mainstream musicians' silence on socio-political issues and corporate/political corruption.
Five Times August represents a case study in modern media independence. By operating without major label infrastructure, Skistimas maintained full control over his master recordings, publishing, and ideological output.
His turn toward anti-authoritarian commentary earned him a distinct position within counter-cultural folk and rock movements. While this pivot alienated conventional industry channels, it established a direct, fan-funded business model that bypasses traditional media gatekeepers through live rallies, independent distribution channels, and direct digital commerce.
