The Indian state of Kerala, often lauded for its serene backwaters and lush Western Ghats, finds itself locked in a relentless annual battle with the ferocity of the Southwest Monsoon. The year 2025 has been no exception, with a series of intense rainfall events leading to widespread flooding, landslides, and significant displacement, once again casting a spotlight on the region's vulnerability to a changing environment.

Following the catastrophic floods of 2018 and subsequent severe monsoon seasons, Kerala has invested heavily in disaster preparedness. Yet, the 2025 monsoon has demonstrated that even with heightened readiness, the sheer scale and intensity of rainfall events continue to push the state's infrastructure and communities to their limits.

Controlled water releases were initiated from key reservoirs, including Lower Periyar and Malankara, in an attempt to manage rising water levels and prevent uncontrolled overflows, a lesson hard-learned from the 2018 crisis.

    • The incessant rains continued throughout June, shifting their heaviest impact to Kerala's northern districts. Kannur and Kasaragod experienced severe waterlogging, which significantly disrupted essential road and rail traffic, isolating communities and hindering supply chains.

    • The accumulated rainfall saturated the hilly terrains, triggering deadly mudslides. A tragic incident in Munnar underscored the persistent danger in the Western Ghats.
